MG MGBMG MGB sports cars were released in 1962-1980. Assembly lines were located in Abingdon, the UK, as well as in Enfield and Zetland, Australia. More than 500 thousand cars were produced.
MG MGB Mk IThe manufacture of MG MGB began in 1962. Firstly, the car was released in a roadster body and had a folding cloth roof, but in 1965 a three-door hatchback coupe MG MGB GT went on sale.
Due to the integral body, the model stood out amongst the vehicles of its class. Also MG MGB was one of the first cars in the world equipped with special deformation zones in the front of the body.
The car had a wheelbase of 2312 mm and wheels with 14-inch-diameter discs. The weight of MG MGB in a roadster body was just 1070 kg. It had high dynamic rates for its time.
The vehicle had chrome metal bumpers and bug-eye style headlights. The rectangular chrome radiator grille had a wide frame. Turn indicators were placed under the headlights. Thin chrome moldings framed the entire length of the side surfaces of the body.
MG MGB Mk IIIn 1968 the production of the second generation of the model - MG MGB Mk II - began. The car got a new power unit, improved transmission and modernized suspension.
MG MGB second-generation cars’ engines were brought in line with the requirements of the new US environmental standards. The dynamic characteristics of the car decreased slightly.
MG MGB Mk II restylingIn 1969 the manufacturer changed the construction of the car body and mounted new seats in the second generation of MG MGB. In 1970 the car got a renewed aluminum radiator grille, colored black.
MG MGB Mk IIIThe third-generation model went on sale in 1972. MG MGB cars differed from its predecessors with a higher quality of a cabin trim. The car became more comfortable. Engine power was reduced again to lower the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
MG MGB Mk III restylingDuring the 1973 restyling, the designers of the third generation model returned some exterior elements of MG MGB Mk I, changing the radiator grille, in particular.
In 1974 the cars, released for the North American market, got updated chrome bumpers with rubber moldings, improved rear optics and modified suspension.
Since 1975 front stabilizer bars were installed for an extra fee only. In 1977 the manufacturer modernized the suspension of MG MGB Mk III again. In 1980 the company finished the production of the model.
MG MGB in different marketsMG US-Spec with an optional third wiper blade and improved trim were produced specifically for the United States. In 1980, the company produced 420 cars MG MGB Roadster Limited Edition in honor of finishing the production.
